Flashback Friday.

September 11, 2009 By Melissa Beene Ford

Two years ago, I started this blog with this post. I can’t believe its been two years already….. both for the blog, AND for the sunroom. Its still our favorite room in the house, and lots of memories have been made in that room in two years! Lots of parties….among them a 40th birthday, a 2 and 3 year old birthday, a Sunday School party involving some really, ummmm, interesting prizes (you had to be there), and many other festivities in between! We’ve loved our ‘party room.’ Here’s where it all began…

OK, I’m going backwards, I know, but I’ll start with our latest project because its the one I’m most excited about….well, other than the kitchen, but only because THIS project means we are ALMOST FINISHED!

For the past 2 1/2 years we’ve used our 570 square foot sunroom as a storage room! We just didn’t have the funds to tackle such a HUGE project and it took us a while to save up for this one. The walls and foundation were eaten up with termites, and the roof was leaky. A tree had fallen on this room before we bought the house, and apparently sat there for quite a while before anyone noticed.

This room had to be gutted to the studs, much of the subfloor and supports replaced, and a new beam put in the ceiling. Its coming together, and I absolutely love this room so far…. it will be such a great family room!

The best features are the HUGE windows removed from an old church, french doors onto our new deck, the super high vaulted ceiling….but the most awe-inspiring part of this room, however, is the twenty or so feet of closets with tons of built-in shelves. Closets are valuable space in ANY home, but ESPECIALLY one built in 1929! We have more than doubled our total closet space! How exciting is that???

Its fun to see how far we’ve come in two years.

And an indescribable relief to know I no longer have to breathe sheetrock dust or try to make a toddler nap through the deafening sound of sawing and hammering…….

It was all worth it though.

Right?

OK, maybe not.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…. or something like that.
