A Berry Good Time.

Melissa Beene Ford/ Uncategorized

Friday, the girls and I took a little trip to the big city of Edom, Texas to visit Blueberry Hill Farms.

It was great! It only took me about an hour of meandering the back roads through Van and New Harmony to find, but at least we got a nice tour of some pretty farms along the way.

Somehow, I can always manage to turn a 16 mile trip into a 2-1/2 hour excursion. For most NORMAL people, though, its pretty much easily accessible from Tyler.

FYI, take highway 31 through Chandler, and not Highway 64 like Google Maps tells you to do…and on a TOTALLY unrelated note, if you ever get lost, *always* blame it on the directions you got from the internet and *nobody* will realize its actually because you’re a blonde.

One of my children (aka the overachieving First Born, aka the good one) got down to business and picked a basket full of berries.

The other one, well, lets just say she went home with a pound of free blueberries in her tummy…

…and five in her basket.

Poor little darling baked in the sun because she forgot her hat and sunscreen. I have tried to teach her to remember these things since infancy (sigh). Some people never learn. She’s three, for goodness sakes, old enough to start taking some responsibility.

Anyway, we actually ended up picking berries for less than 10 minutes because it was HOT and THE WHITE PEOPLE WERE MELTING.

(Name that movie.)

Especially the white people with white hair and very little pigmentation to protect their delicate skin from the beating Texas sun.

We came home and ate blueberries, and ate and ate more blueberries, and then made blueberry muffins for breakfast the next morning. (We cheated and bought a couple of pints, already picked…)

And we’ll definitely be going back before the season ends this coming weekend!

I’ll try to get Annie to remember her hat and sunscreen next time.

I have to do everything around here…..

~~~
To change the subject…
All of the above pictures were taken with my cell phone, believe it or not! Good thing, since my third digital camera was killed the other day. I won’t say which one, but *ONE* of my children aka Dennis the Menace dropped it on the concrete floor and shattered it.
I actually thought, for about 58 seconds, about permanently going back to my old-school film camera, and even bought a $13 battery for it and located what wa perhaps the last antiquated, dusty box of 200 speed film within a 100 mile radius, on a dark, vacant aisle of CVS.
You young whippersnappers are probably too young to remember film….
Anyhoo, after hauling that 12 pound late-1990s-era antique camera out of my car and squinting through that tee-nincy little window to try to catch a glimpse of *WHAT* exactly I was trying to photograph, I thought the heck with this and decided that no matter what I have to sell on ebay, I have to buy another digital camera.
And any child who so much as touches it gets a one-way ticket to Azleway.
    The blueberry picking looked like fun – you brave soul!!! I haven't ventured out with my kiddos to do that yet. I'm not willing to endure the heat! 🙂 Glad ya'll had a good time.
I don’t know who’s big idea it was to strip 80 I don’t know who’s big idea it was to strip 80 years of paint off of this door down to the wood and start over… but that person has no business starting new projects. 😅 My neighbors must have thought this project would never end. *I* thought this project would never end. 😰 If you’re thinking of doing this yourself? Just don’t, ok? Throw the whole door away and buy a new one. 😂🤣 Just kidding.  Old house weirdos like me… we can’t just do things the easy way. Anyhoo… after some trial and error, @sherwinwilliams Celestial is what I landed on, and I have to say… I like it. Periwinkle-ish blue looks great with the yellow house and will look even better when the azaleas are in bloom. Was it all worth it? That’s not important right now. 🤭 Will I do this all again in two years? The magic eight ball says… without a doubt. 👏🏻 I’ve already picked the next color. #gluttonforpunishment #somefoolsneverlearn #oldhouselove #oldhomelove #makinghome #southernliving #gardenandgun #azaleadistrict #tylertx
2022 had its highs and lows for sure, but scrollin 2022 had its highs and lows for sure, but scrolling through my pics from the last twelve months made me realize how blessed and content I am. Prosperity, love, and peace have been ours in abundance, in spite of the pain of losing my dad. The second picture is the last picture of him… the last time I saw him. 💔 But God has been good to my family this year and 2022 is ending far better than it began. 😄 #2022inreview #thanksforthememories
Who wants a Christmas tour of my home? 🙋🏼‍ Who wants a Christmas tour of my home? 🙋🏼‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s it. That’s the tour. (Slide two).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a new trend I’m starting: bare Christmas tree. Lowe’s tag still attached (so quirky and unexpected)! Christmas ornaments still in boxes. Coming soon to an Anthropologie window display near you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every year I think, “next year I’ll do better. Next year I’ll have it together.” And then, here we are on the SIXTH Christmas that we’ve been in this house, the sixth Christmas I’ve dragged our chaotic bunch of Christmas mess out of a chaotic garage I still haven’t unpacked from our move six years ago.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe this year is the year I’ll organize it all and put it back neatly so that by Christmas number 7, it will be smooth sailing. People will flock to my social media to see how I’ve pulled everything off SO PERFECTLY. Next year will be my year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Seems every year there’s less and less bandwidth for all these things. There’s more grief and stress, less money. More demands, less grace.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I put this sign on the wall in my office so I could keep it in front of my eyes: Love. Joy. Peace. And all that. I am SO unlike Jesus most days. So lacking in all of these character qualities. And that’s WITH waking up most mornings and spending my first 30 minutes with God Himself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How lost would I be without that? Geez. I can’t fathom. I REQUIRE being transformed by renewing my mind every single morning, and even then, responding to people and life with love, joy, peace and patience doesn’t come naturally.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the goal, though.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This weary world needs that from us Believers during this season, more than ever… even more than an Anthropologie-window-display worthy Christmas home tour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m working on both.
