My Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Experiment.

Melissa Beene Ford/ Health

In my efforts to make my home 1. more frugal and 2. less toxic, I decided that I needed to try making my own dishwasher detergent.

WHY? Because store-bought dishwasher detergent contains phosphates, chlorine, and petroleum-based products a whole bunch of junk that has been proven to wreck your liver and cause cancer. In fact, cancer-guru Hulda Clark says that if someone in your household has cancer, you shouldn’t wash their dishes in the dishwasher at all.

Hulda is ***OUT THERE*** but, well, I’ve had a child diagnosed with a brain tumor, and that was the day my world stopped and I decided I’d follow Hulda anywhere…

{Yes, there is Seventh Generation, but it’s a small investment and these are tough economic times, yo}.

So anyhoo. I googled ‘homemade dishwasher detergent recipe‘ and there are, like, a dizzying number of them out there. I decided I had to just jump in and start with one and see how it goes. Ready?

You’ll need only three ingredients: Borax. Baking Soda. Lemonade Kool-Aid.

Stir together 2 cups of Borax, 2 cups of baking soda, and 4 packets of lemonade-flavored Kool-Aid.

I gave it all a whirl in my food processor, because both the borax and baking soda fell out in large, hard chunks that didn’t mix well with a spoon.

And there you have it.

I don’t know if this is the best recipe, or the least toxic {it does have borax in it. Isn’t borax toxic???}

I think the Kool-aid is for the citric acid which dissolves in anhydrous ethanol (76 parts of citric acid per 100 parts of ethanol) at 15 °C melts the grease or something, and the lemonade flavor won’t stain your dishwasher, like, say, if you used black cherry Kool-aid or something.

And so far? So good. We don’t have really hard or really soft water, which I think makes a difference, but as far as I’m concerned this works better than the pricey stuff I had been using.

The pricey stuff had been leaving an oily film and bits of food stuck to my dishes, and this… has not.

And furthermore, it was dang cheap to make. I spent maybe ten bucks on all this stuff, which made … uh… 2 cups times pi carry the 4 multiply by the square of the hypoteneuse… about a quart, and I don’t know how long that will last or how that price compares down to the penny, but I have a whole bunch of borax and baking soda left to make more. It’s a win-win.

Have you tried making your own? How did it work out for you?

I make my own, but with Lemishine.  I do add three drops of blue dawn to mine now though, because it was leaving things just slightly gritty.  Of course, it may have been the kids not rinsing the dishes, too.  I will try the kool-aid next batch!

Three drops to each load, not to the entire batch.  That looked confusing!

I've tried a recipe almost exactly like this. I also put white vinegar in the rinse aid spot. The first few loads seemed great. But ever since, not so good. All glassware comes out filmy and spotted, and doesn't improve much being wiped with a towel after taking it out of the dishwasher. Besides, who wants to handle dishes more than once? 🙂 It may have everything to do with our

I don’t know who’s big idea it was to strip 80 I don’t know who’s big idea it was to strip 80 years of paint off of this door down to the wood and start over… but that person has no business starting new projects. 😅 My neighbors must have thought this project would never end. *I* thought this project would never end. 😰 If you’re thinking of doing this yourself? Just don’t, ok? Throw the whole door away and buy a new one. 😂🤣 Just kidding. Old house weirdos like me… we can’t just do things the easy way. Anyhoo… after some trial and error, @sherwinwilliams Celestial is what I landed on, and I have to say… I like it. Periwinkle-ish blue looks great with the yellow house and will look even better when the azaleas are in bloom. Was it all worth it? That’s not important right now. 🤭 Will I do this all again in two years? The magic eight ball says… without a doubt. 👏🏻 I’ve already picked the next color. #gluttonforpunishment #somefoolsneverlearn #oldhouselove #oldhomelove #makinghome #southernliving #gardenandgun #azaleadistrict #tylertx

2022 had its highs and lows for sure, but scrollin 2022 had its highs and lows for sure, but scrolling through my pics from the last twelve months made me realize how blessed and content I am. Prosperity, love, and peace have been ours in abundance, in spite of the pain of losing my dad. The second picture is the last picture of him… the last time I saw him. 💔 But God has been good to my family this year and 2022 is ending far better than it began. 😄 #2022inreview #thanksforthememories
Who wants a Christmas tour of my home? 🙋🏼‍ Who wants a Christmas tour of my home? 🙋🏼‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s it. That’s the tour. (Slide two).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a new trend I’m starting: bare Christmas tree. Lowe’s tag still attached (so quirky and unexpected)! Christmas ornaments still in boxes. Coming soon to an Anthropologie window display near you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every year I think, “next year I’ll do better. Next year I’ll have it together.” And then, here we are on the SIXTH Christmas that we’ve been in this house, the sixth Christmas I’ve dragged our chaotic bunch of Christmas mess out of a chaotic garage I still haven’t unpacked from our move six years ago.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe this year is the year I’ll organize it all and put it back neatly so that by Christmas number 7, it will be smooth sailing. People will flock to my social media to see how I’ve pulled everything off SO PERFECTLY. Next year will be my year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Seems every year there’s less and less bandwidth for all these things. There’s more grief and stress, less money. More demands, less grace.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I put this sign on the wall in my office so I could keep it in front of my eyes: Love. Joy. Peace. And all that. I am SO unlike Jesus most days. So lacking in all of these character qualities. And that’s WITH waking up most mornings and spending my first 30 minutes with God Himself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How lost would I be without that? Geez. I can’t fathom. I REQUIRE being transformed by renewing my mind every single morning, and even then, responding to people and life with love, joy, peace and patience doesn’t come naturally.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the goal, though.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This weary world needs that from us Believers during this season, more than ever… even more than an Anthropologie-window-display worthy Christmas home tour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m working on both.
