The Great Watermelon Harvest of 2013.

Melissa Beene Ford/ Uncategorized

We didn’t really expect much when we planted watermelon seeds back in the spring. We had tried last year and gophers ~ or something ~ ate the roots out from under all our plants, so we didn’t get one single melon!

Dumb gophers.

And then, this year, we moved to our new/old house, and brought our little sprouted seedlings with us, which isn’t the best thing for your vegetables. We lost our okra and our onions and what did survive was sort of crippled this season. We’re beginners anyway, so this whole gardening thing has mostly been a guessing game.

But then there was this:

Our watermelon vines have gone nuts! Nuts, I tell you! They’ve taken over our back yard!

We picked this one before it was quite ripe ~ we didn’t know, being beginners and all ~ but it was the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted, NO exaggeration. We cut it open and salted it and ate the WHOLE THING.

And now? We have at least 172 more watermelons coming to fruition as we speak. We check them every 15 minutes, hovering over them like a protective parent, talking to them…

Sharpening his knife so he can cut their little hearts out and EAT THEM.

Oh yeah. I can’t wait.

Maybe next time we’ll actually share with the kids…

I don't care what we grow as long as I'm growing it with you. Whether it's watermelons, finances or babies, it's always fun with my girl. I DO wish we could grow some steak or oreo trees though.
